Ways to develop subject knowledge is a central question in the field of education, so not one easily answered. I suggest the answer lies in, as you wrote: "learn and experience". Students need to be provided with the opportunity to experience the subject, either through a simulation, supervised on-the-job work, or a combination of both. As an example, some students at the Australian National University work in teams to produce software for real clients, while others are interns working in companies. Go through the latest editions of text books in your subject fields. Please note that the information we get through textbooks is at least 5-8 years old. Therefore, what we get through textbooks may not be current knowledge. If you want to be current in your subject knowledge, you should inculcate the habit of reading journal articles pertaining to your subject regularly. Reading journal articles and reviews definitely help us to update and improve subject knowledge.

Learning new things in our fields of interest is so much easier as we find or even make a way to do so, but when it comes to subjects that we have to learn without fundamental knowledge or enough interest, it will be helpful to divide the subject into some parts that each one could be learned by a distinct method. For example some comparisons are learned better using diagrams and charts. Or in the field of languages, having communication with expert teachers and natives is beneficial.

Attending to classes regularly, going to library and referring to text books, reading by downloading the material from internet, attending to workshops, seminars and conferences for listening to lectures and interaction are the ways to improve subject knowledge.

Reading books has, perhaps, no alternative. Besides, an open eye, open mind, seeing and logically interpreting the hands-on experiences, sharing ideas, refining the existing understanding and, above all, an inquisitiveness are all that are most important in this direction.

Subject knowledge is developed only when one create and has interest. This requires hard work with patience. Continous reading of books of interest, remembering and at the same time reproducing improves subject knowledge.

Continue to read immensely on the subject matter including books and articles. Maintain a short summary of each article you have read. Summarize in a list of what has been accomplished thus far in the filed and what questions still remain. Seek answers for those questions. This is the systematic way of becoming proficient in a certain subject matter.
