Recent literature study reveals that certain prion proteins are involved in long term memory storage in nerve synapses and has certain physiological function. But prion proteins are known to be amyloidogenic and causes several neural disorders. What is the exact difference between toxic and functional PPr ?
The prion theory is that the shape of the protein is what differentiates the normal form from the pathogenic form of prion proteins. Moreover, the pathogenic form of the protein has the ability to induce other molecules of the protein to take on the pathogenic structure.

In a recent publication from Stowers institute of a Medical Research, they reported that certain PPr are self perpetuating in the nerve synapses and have a functional role in maintaining the long term memory. In this scenario, is it possible to compare and contrast pathogenic and non pathogenic PPr? We can use this information to convert pathogenic to non pathogenic PPr as a cure for neural disorders.
