Diacetyl ferrocene is typically generated from ferrocene. Once you have diacetyl ferrocene, the subsequent reaction should be straight forward (i.e., a typical condensation reaction with hydrazine hydrochloride, and workup)
To prevent polymerization when using hydrazine during the reaction course, you should add the slight excess of hydrazine.HCl or hydrazine dissolved in suitable solvent (like dioxane) to the solution of diacetyl ferrocene dissolved in the same solvent gradully with constant stirring at RT and not the reverse (i,e dont add the diacetyl ferrocene to the hydrazine) and keep it at RT for few hours, then filter your product, and crystallize it.
