I need to conduct an in planta insect bio-assay against sucking pest, cotton aphid (Aphis gossyipi) in cotton within this week but not getting any source from where I can collect at least 5000 to 6000 neo-natal nymphs to load on 200 cotton plants. Kindly suggest me institutions from where I can order ready nymphs or at least eggs.

There are many host races of A. gossypii, so if you want to put them on cotton you had better collect them from cotton or obtain them from a colony maintained on cotton. You could also collect them from cucurbits or citrus, for example, but you will probably have high mortality getting them to transition to cotton.

I am afraid that I am not much help. If it were a cereal aphid, it would be no problem as we rear just about all here. But I do agree, if you find a source of cotton aphid, it should come from cotton and not another host. A gossypii is notorious for having host races.

I agree with Dr. Michaud. Your study will be more meaningful if you rear or get the cotton aphids reared on cotton plants. If you can collect the cotton aphid adults from fields, I think you can easily rear on growth chamber and get required number for your experiment. Eppendorf set up work well for rearing aphids quickly in growth chamber. I have use this method for my study (Shrestha et al., 2015 Biological control)

Dr. Michaud is right, biotypes exits for this pest. But since you are working on cotton, aphids from cotton plants or reared on cotton plants are preferred. I worked with the pest using Okra (Abelmoschus sp.) also from the Malvaceae botanical family are did not find sub species.

I suggest that you rear and establish your own culture. Also, for good results and outcomes it is so important to rear the cotton aphids on cotton plants as an adaptation period.
