There are multiple ways to safely capture Varanus bengalensis, depending on size. Noose methods and live-traps (with bait) are the most common. See book by professor Walter Auffenberg, The Bengal Monitor.     

Researchers in Florida have had some success trapping varanids and especially tegus with live traps such as Havaharts (a google search will reveal more details).  For smaller species or those less reliably attracted to bait, drift-fence arrays with funnel traps and pitfall traps are a standard technique used to live-trap herpetofauna including small lizards.  Diurnally basking species are often caught using a long pole and noose (do this when they are cool and trying to warm up, thus they are sluggish and easily caught).

Thanks a lot. I tried though. Being in an open landscape it a bit difficult to use live baits as other small mammals get attracted to it.

In West Africa there is a park manager on the W national park trapping Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) with Havahart trap too. He had a big succes
