What are the pros and cons of using simulation as a research method namely in (mechanical/structural) engineering sciences? How necessary is it to triangulate simulation with other research methods (and why)?
I would appreciate it if you could list a number of downloadable articles/books.

In general simulation is used for solution of complex problems which do not have an analytical solution or they are too complicated to try an analytical solution. The calculation of the risk over a given region possed by natural phenomena is a good example: the risk is a very complex function of hazard, exposure and vulnerability, and it can only be solved by simulation, see: Conference Paper Climate Futures for Tasmania: Severe wind hazard and risk assessment
In other cases the phenomenon is not very frequent and there are not enough samples to develop a (statistical) model as in earthquakes, in this case, the best method to study the impact of the phenomenon over a region is by a probabilistic simulation, see for instance:

In all cases the art of model development via simulation is the validation of the model, this is done by comparing model results with observations of the phenomenon.
