COVID-19 pandemic will have huge implications on future of machine learning, Deep learning and Data Science globally. What are some of the possible that researchers should know?
An interesting question concerns the above question: What are the possible implications of COVID-19 pandemic on future of machine learning, Deep learning and Data Science globally? Well, I think that this type of unusual, unusual, key global problems which is the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic causing Covid-19 disease usually cause the acceleration of the development of analytical technologies and their applications for the analysis of both the development processes of a given problem and the analysis of its real and potential effects, etc. Already, advanced technologies for processing large data sets on Big Data Analytics analytical platforms are used to improve forecasting models. In addition, acceleration of digitization and internetization of many economic processes is already observed in many countries. Many colleges and schools continue the teaching process through e-learning. Logistics in many companies is replaced by e-logistics. The importance of electronic online payments is growing. Many people in home quarantine do their work remotely via the Internet. A significant part of trade in some product ranges has changed from traditional, stationary operations to e-commerce, etc. All these processes increase the pressure on application growth and motivate the development of technologies such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Data Science at present and in subsequent years and other technologies typical of the current fourth technological revolution referred to as Industry 4.0.
As usual, this may also be moulded in a digitized framework for the sake of quick detection and medication. See also https://hbr.org/2020/04/leveraging-ai-to-battle-this-pandemic-and-the-next-one
I think that, AI is the only thing which could help in handling the consequences of this pandemic. It will also help in developing the counter measures to avoid severe drawbacks, and will help for inventing early detection and prediction techniques. Moreover, it will assist in finding and producing possible vaccinations.
Dear Joab, Thank you for posing this excellent question. My bet is on the area of logistics and the automation thereof. Why? Common sense would argue that, while we are seeking to treat the sick and to protect the not-yet-sick, we need to provide food and water to all.
The last two months have shown that logistics, i.e. the mechanisms of distributing medicine, medical machinery, food, water and so forth, have not, in their classical form, been sufficient to avoid chaos, fear, confusion and even panic. Furthermore, these mechanisms continue to degrade to the point where shortages are either already in existence or are predictable with a 6 months' horizon. This is a consequence of global proportions that natural intelligence does not seem to be able to parse and process into viable solutions.
AI-supported supply chain management with autonomous pickup and delivery (road and air), therefore, seems to me a worthwhile problem for the combined robotics and data science community of the world to take on and solve. Fore, should we sit idly philosophizing, while food items have to be destroyed in some countries, because there is nothing there to deliver them to anywhere in the world where they are needed?
In my opinion it is learning for all, doesn't matter how much you die for new release of an intelligent phone / games movies etc. But truism is food is most satisfying thing and we cant deny that.
Thus time has come to utilize this AI/ML deep learning and data analytics in combine as tool which help food processing industry and farmers directly.
The question is how? currently government has many mobile based application which tells farmer how to irrigate & manage crops, but they don't give inputs like calamity /disaster, what a farmer should do, how can he/she save crops to get destroyed, lack of macro management.
No adequate geographical, weather conditions, soil management, fertilizers management, etc. input get conveyed in lucid manner and in real time to the farmers.
Therefore it is time we model a tool which brought all this information in an intelligent manner for all.
I predict some Giant software company sooner or later going to focus on intelligent food processing and agriculture, [ can be wrong, but probably that can be ]
