I plan to extract the volatile material from vegetable charcoal to further analyze the extract. I thought about doing the extraction with polar and nonpolar solvents. someone might suggest some solvents to extract these volatile materials of the charcoal, please? In wood, extractives can be removed using ethyl alcohol-toluene (1:2); Ethanol, acetone and hot water. For charcoal, which would be the most suitable solvents?

I think that drag with steam can be a good ideia, but you can try polar and non polar solvents too.

A non-solvent approach would be to see what you can pull off under vacuum using a cold trap. You would want to be able to cmpare this to results with solvents, Gentle heating would probably be required for higher molecular weight compounds, but you would want to start out with minimal heat and higher pressures (less vacuum initially) and work your way to lower pressures and higher temperatures.
Use carbon disulfide and analyze the extract with GC (NIOSH method 1501). In alternative, I suggest dichloromethane using a soxhlet apparatus.
I like Paulo's idea of using steam (not to dissolve) but to evaporate using heat. The use of some toxic solvents is avoided (mecl).
