The scientific name of the Rudraksha plant is Elaeocarpus ganitrus. It is considered important in Hindu culture as the dried seeds of this plant, known as Rudraksha beads, are used as prayer beads and are associated with the deity Shiva, often worn for protection and chanting mantras.

The Astanga Hridaya, written by the great sage Vagbhata, also highlights the significance of Rudraksha for its mental health benefit. It emphasizes that Rudraksha has a calming effect and is useful in meditation and concentration.
According to Sushruta Samhita, primarily known for its surgical and medical treatment, mentions the use of natural seeds and plants for medicinal purposes Rudraksha, in particular is noted for it’s therapeutic potential in soothing Vata and Pitta doshas in Ayurveda. It is recommended for its anti- inflammatory and pain relieving properties
The use in Ayurveda and Rudraksha has traditionally been attributed with balancing and calming effects, particularly in the regulation of blood pressure (Rai, Acharya, & B., 2009). Phytochemical analyses reveal that its seeds contain alkaloids, flavonoids, and various phenolic compounds, all of which may exert a broad spectrum of biological activities (Arora & Nair, 2019). Experimental studies have demonstrated notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, suggesting that Rudraksha could be relevant in managing inflammation-related conditions and oxidative stress (Dwivedi & Dwivedi, 2012). Preliminary animal studies also indicate anxiolytic and mildly sedative properties, thereby providing a rationale for its traditional use in mitigating stress and aiding sleep (Rai et al., 2009). However, clinical data in humans remain limited. Some case reports hint at the possibility of blood pressure reduction, although well-designed randomized trials are needed to substantiate these observations (Arora & Nair, 2019). Information on adverse effects or potential drug interactions is likewise scarce, meriting caution when using Rudraksha therapeutically.
Overall, Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) exhibits promising medicinal properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic effects. Despite a longstanding tradition of use in Ayurvedic practice, comprehensive clinical studies are lacking. Future research must focus on well-controlled trials to clarify the efficacy, safety, and appropriate dosage of Rudraksha-based preparations. Until such evidence is available, medical guidance is advisable for those considering the use of Rudraksha in therapeutic settings.
