Much of the research discusses similarities between embryonic and cancer stem cells. We want to highlight the most prominent of these points.
Known similarities:
Long term renewal.
Differentiation into specialized cell types.
Conjunctures:
--The activation of embryonic stem cell (ESC)-like gene expression in adult cells is --considered to endow self-renewal to cancer stem cells.
--Regulatory programs that are characteristic of embryonic stem cells are believed to be recapitulated by cancer stem cells.
--Similarities in c-Myc, important transcriptional regulator.
--Possibly, DNA methylation, although it might have differential effects.
