As the catfishes are scaleless, in small cages either made by net or other materials, when the fish bodies come in to the touch of cage, small lesions develop, Then first bacterial and in more severe cases fungus infection follow. The net of the small cages are also not very friendly for pectoral and dorsal spines and barbels of these fishes. You should carefully check the DO, pH and dissolved pollutants in the water. As they are spiny, there might be some physical injury caused by the spines if you keep them in a net cage at crowded condition which eventually increases the mortality.
First of all you should check the water quality. If its alright then you can go for rest of the observation, whether cage material is causing any kind of injury to them or not.
