After reading many research papers i am not sure that what is the main function of PEM in MFC's. PEM separates the cathode and anode chamber and transfer the protons from anode to cathode.
The role of proton exchange membrane is avoiding short circuits between both electrodes by acting as a separator.

It is downloaded. You wrote proton exchange membrane is avoiding short circuits but how? In this paper there are so many drawbacks in Protons exchange member and its estimated cost is 40% of the total cost of a finished MFC( Microbial fuel cell). Actually we are developing membrane less MFC as a biosensors. So, please suggest me how i can increase output in the membrane less MFC as a biosensor.
