- a bad start

- a bad project manager / thesis director / lab director / working group .....

- a bad work environment - problems everywhere / unnecessary constraints ..

- a bad funding of your research. / no justice in funding....

- no encouragement and the distructive critic.

- the total isolation.

- sometimes it must be said: I do not know. Please help me.

- bad writing of a good job. causes a disaster.

- work alone, to write alone, .... alone. It is not good. It gives results but not as a group.

Comprehensive literature survey is necessary to identify potential for research. Without this, researcher will not have clarity of purpose of research. Need to plan methodology meticulously. Need some mentors , Professors or collaborator to keep motivating and providing proper directions during research work. Researchers need to identify modules during research work and try to close stage by stage rather than keeping whole work open ended.

Some of the reason for research failure are: 1. Inadequate literature review, poor problem formulation and unsuitable selection of objectives.

2. Inadequate experimental design and improper modelling.

3. Lack of consistency and motivation

4. Poor supervision and disharmony among team members.

4. Lack of funds and it's poor handling

5. Improper planning and execution

Result of every important work is dependent on two main factors - proper pre planning and devotion of the workers.

If the preplanning of research is performed by considering proper identification of the research subject as per need of of the speciality, novelty of the subject, availability of resources, prevailing conditions of the institution, capability of the supervisor and seriousness of the researcher, I think there may be no chance of total failure.

Negative result or result different from pre expectation should not be considered as failure. Such results require repetition of the experiments only.

Some of the requirements for a successful career in research is to have lot of patience to keep on doing experiments, learning from failures and introspecting a lot.

The researcher is required to come to terms with the situation that after "n" number of failures success may come at the (n+1)th attempt. It becomes the responsibility of the guide / supervisor / seniors to provide suitable inputs and help the young researcher in keeping the number "n" within a reasonable limit.

- Financial limitations (and other related limitations)

- Poor planning ( and/or no planning at all)

- Poor commitment (and/or no commitment at all)

- Poor communication (and/or no communication at all)

- Lastly but not the least on my list:: Team disintegration (Infighting, factions, favoritism, unprofessional conduct, etc of that sort)

Nice question but do we have a failed research or a research without the expected result as I will like to put it. My emphasis will be on research with deviations in the result. Knowing reason why a research is tagged "failed" should be a research on it own. When we don't get expected result, we need to have a look at our check list such as:

Research objective

Sample collection and preparation if applicable

Solvent, reagent preparation

Equipment and calibration

Method/modified methods

Researcher/Personnel factor.

If after this, we are still confronted with deviated outcome/result then we must dig deeper to know why.

Research never fails in true sense.Sometimes due use of inappropriate methodology for collection data,analysis and interpretation may lead to inconclusive outcome.This is termed as failure.Nice answer also you have given.Really it is appreciable indeed Dr Segun
