Mycetoma caused by Pyrenochaeta romeroi and Madurella grisea are similar. Both fungi look similar in culture except that in Pyrenochaeta romeroi spores are formed in typical pychnidia. Are there techniques which delineate the two species?
In routine isolation and identification, we identified both species as Madurella grisea which were studied in IMI, England, and identified 2 cultures as P. romeroi by Punithalingam. In our laboratory we could not induce spore production. We could do morphological studies which are of little help in differentiation of the two species. Are there other ways by which these two can be delineated?
