COVID-19 has already become a hot topic until now. Recently, I read an article about a new mutation of COVID-19, such as B117 from English, B1151 from South Africa, and P1 from Brazil. What're the differences between those mutations? And which mutation is the most dangerous?
There is no clear answer to your question. Let me try to explain. Firstly, variants could be having increased transmission potential, evade immunity from prior vaccination or natural infection and lastly can cause severe disease. Till date we have some evidence in the first two wherein there is definitely higher transmission and some ability of the variant strain to evade immune response. We don't have any evidence yet to say that these variants cause more severe disease. However, indirectly due to increased transmission and immunity evasion, the strains can cause too many cases too quickly and hence the health system would be stretched to an extent that beds and resources are getting depleted. Now because of the surge, many individuals may die. That cannot be equated to causing more severe disease as compared to the previous strains of 2020. Hope this helps.
