I'm a cartographer and working on usability of simple design screen maps. My case study includes label placement task (which is related with users' visual search abilities). I'm using a 16 channel EEG amplifier. As far as I have read, FEF, LIP and superior colliculus are activated during this kind of tasks. If you provide any tips or guidelines, I'd be appriciated.

With your setup, I would work only in the electrodes space, ESI won't be really accurate.
The number of electrodes improves significantly the source-localization until you reach 100-128 electrodes, extra electrodes won't improve your solution much more. It also depends on the sort of activity you are interested in studying, if your are exploring large neuronal activation, the 64 channels might be sufficient.

I'm in agree with Thalia, use the classical nineteen as an initial setup. But, what are you looking for? Are you expecting to detect an ERP associated with the place identification in the map? Or are you interest in the dynamics of the EEG signals during the map reading?

If it is the case, you are looking for activation in the parietal, central and some frontal regions. So the electrodes labeled with P, C and F could be a good choice. I suggest you to use: Cz, C3, C4, Pz, P3, P4, Fz, F3, F4, O1, O2 and some electrodes near to the eyes in order to record horizontal an vertical movements. Reference to the ear lobes and mastoids as ground.

Erik, I am actually interested in the dynamics of the EEG signals during the map reading tasks. I will also use eye tracking simultaneously. Your answer helped me to understand which electrodes I should be focused on. We are aiming to create brain topography by using all electrodes. But in data analysis, it is important to know which regions are activated more, beforehand (at least to build a hypothesis).
