There are good commercial freeze drying medium/buffers for this purpose however in Africa not all laboratories and institutions can afford their cost in the long term on a sustainable basis.

You can try commercial freeze drying solutions. If not affordable, use of glycerol in the preservation set-up is considerable.

You can try 1:1 mix with 30% glycerol (sterile). That has always worked for me in different labs.
