Far from being a connoisseur of the subject, I wanted to add a complementary question to Lukasz Derdowski 's interesting question to Michael Uebel 's answer: What is the state of the social sciences in terms of scientific rigour today? I leave a brief and surely erroneous summary of the state of the art, as an introduction to the problem.

If we consider that causality is an inaccessible feature of nature Firstly, a difference is made between causality - an inaccessible feature of nature - and the causal explanation. The latter would be the objective of science, however, there are different ways of conceiving the causal explanation. The gnoseological discussions regarding the impossibility of knowing the ontological part of causality are particularly noteworthy. Leaving aside the philosophical arguments, the experimental approach that certain currents suppose, as the path that brings science closer to the generation of causal explanations. These will be taken increasingly plausible to the extent that they overcome successive empirical contrasts.

If we place ourselves in the field of the Social Sciences, these cannot do without a causal explanation either, but they must be handled with greater caution and care. Mostly social research provides rigorous and coherent explanations of how an event occurs without managing to explain why it occurs. Two explanatory positions in the social sciences stand out in predominant positions. On the one hand, the one that understands the explanation as causality in the way of natural sciences; on the other hand, the one that rejects deterministic models in social sciences, accepting statistical explanations and structural-functional explanations, and therefore considering that explanations are different in social sciences.

But within the heterogeneity of social science approaches, the lack of agreement on the correct way to explain, with a varied typology of options to develop explanations, stands out. As an example we can mention the following classification: Nominal-deductive explanation; Statistical explanation; Process explanation; Functional explanation; Critical-rational explanation; and Teleological explanation.

The scientific acceptance of the various explanation options allows the development of qualitative approaches, previously rejected by pseudoscientists or speculators.

If we carefully analyse, for example, the issue of explanation and understanding, we will realise that there are areas, that is, specific problems, in which an explanation is much more feasible than in others, and, on the other hand, there are problems in which a causal explanation is not possible, thus making it necessary to use comprehensive arguments. Therefore, everything depends on the specific cases or problems under study. In short, social structures, unlike natural ones, do not exist and do not produce causal effects independently of human activity, which means that causality in social life cannot be spoken of in exactly the same terms as in natural phenomena. Therefore, in social sciences the causal explanation could never be of a mechanistic type, it must consider the meaning and intentionality of the action of social subjects.

Lejos de ser un conocedor del tema, quería adicionar un interrogante complementario a la interesante pregunta de Lukasz a la respuesta de Michael . ¿Cuál es la situación de las ciencias sociales en términos de rigor científico en la actualidad? Dejo un breve y seguramente errónea síntesis del estado del arte, a modo de introducción a la problemática.

Si se considera que la causalidad es un rasgo inaccesible de la naturaleza. En primer lugar, se marca una diferencia entre la causalidad -un rasgo inaccesible de la naturaleza-, y la explicación causal. Este último seria el objetivo de la ciencia, no obstante, existen diferentes maneras de concebir la explicación causal. Destacándose las discusiones gnoseológicas respecto a la imposibilidad de poder conocer la parte ontológica de la causalidad. Dejando de lado los argumentos filosóficos, la aproximación experimental que supone ciertas corrientes, como el camino que más acerca a la ciencia a la generación de explicaciones causales. Estas se tomarán cada vez más verosímiles en la medida en que superen sucesivos contrastes empíricos.

Si nos situamos en el campo de las Ciencias Sociales, estas tampoco pueden prescindir de la explicación causal, no obstante, deben manejarse con mayor cautela y precaución. Mayormente la investigación social aporta explicaciones rigurosas y coherentes de cómo ocurre un hecho sin conseguir explicar por qué ocurre. En posturas predominantes se destaca dos posiciones explicativas en ciencias sociales. Por un lado, la que entiende la explicación como causalidad a la manera de las ciencias naturales; por otro lado, la que rechaza los modelos deterministas en las ciencias sociales, aceptando las explicaciones estadísticas y las explicaciones estructural-funcionales, y que, por tanto, consideran que las explicaciones son diferentes en las ciencias sociales.

Pero dentro de la heterogeneidad de abordajes de las ciencias sociales, se destaca la falta de acuerdo respecto forma correcta de explicar, con una variada tipología de opciones para desarrollar explicaciones. A modo de ejemplo podemos mencionar la siguiente clasificación: Explicación nomológico-deductiva; Explicación estadística; Explicación por procesos; Explicación funcional; Explicación crítico-racional; y Explicación teleológica.

La aceptación científica de las diversas opciones de explicación permite el desarrollo de los enfoques cualitativos, antes rechazados por pseudocientíficos o especulativos.

Si analizamos con cuidado, por ejemplo, el tema de la explicación y la comprensión nos percataremos de que hay ámbitos, o sea, problemas específicos, en los que la explicación es mucho más factible que en otros y, por su parte, hay problemas en los cuales no es posible una explicación causal, resultando necesario, por ende, valerse de argumentos comprensivos. Por tanto, todo depende de los casos o problemas concretos que se encuentren bajo nuestro estudio. En síntesis, las estructuras sociales, a diferencia de las naturales, no existen ni producen efectos causales independientemente de la actividad humana, esto hace que no puede hablarse de causalidad en la vida social exactamente en los mismos términos que en los fenómenos naturales. Por tanto, en ciencias sociales la explicación causal no podría ser nunca de tipo mecanicista, debe considerar el significado y la intencionalidad de la acción de los sujetos sociales.

I agree with the previous comment, I would guide you towards Gregory Bateson systemic perspective, extremely useful and relevant to a wide variety of social phenoenas and subjects

I have this feeling that "causal inference" and "natural-born storytellers" are so different from each other - already at the level of the underlying logic - that it is impossible to lump them both together under a single category. To use the conventional terminology: on the one hand there is 'evidence-based research' that presupposes the Western 'dualism' between facts and symbols, objectivity and subjectivity, going back at least as far as Descartes - the other is narrative, which presupposes a tale told by an individual person, of the 'this is what I have seen/experienced' type. This is after all the common heritage of the 'West', and most especially the Protestant North of Europe: this acceptance of a fundamental 'difference' between the objective here, the subjective there. From what you write, one has this feeling that what you call 'linearity bias' presupposes that this distinction between objectivity and subjectivity in the above sense no longer holds. Would you be prepared to elaborate on why you think this familiar objectivity/subjectivity distinction can be/should be scrapped? (I can think, by the way of a considerable literature in which the necessity of the combination of these two different 'logics' is being discussed, but you seem to presuppose that one can just put the whole debate behind one, just venture out and invent the wheel all over again ...)

Альтернативой системного подхода является комплексный анализ с голоморфными функциями, применяемый в математике. Существует многофакторный анализ М.М. Ковалевского и фрактальный метод, их цель - идентификация ключевого, активного объекта среди множества подобных ему, но пассивных.
