What do you mean by reference architectures? Hardware infrastructure to manage biomedical images (e.g. a PACS that can be compared to an ERP having a common stantard communication protocol, DICOM ... you can look DCM4CHEE ) ? Detailed programming patterns to put images into a correct data structure to analyze them (in that case I would suggest you to check out the architecture of big open-source projects such as ITK that can even make parallel treatment or ImageJ )? or maybe you talk about architectures to work with big complex data that include work in GPU, clusters (you can check out VIP project http://www.creatis.insa-lyon.fr/vip/ ), ... Biomedical image processing is very wide in terms of architecture. Now, there are some works adopting cloud computing to run image processing algorithms, that's the new wave but I don't have a good reference for you.

Reference architecture is a set of all this that you wrote: PACS, DICOM, Cloud, etc... mix these architectural styles (Cloud, PACS) and a reference model (DICOM) we can derive a new reference architecture (a model) for CAD systems architecture.
