I do research on genetic code and aminoacyl-tRNA-synthetase (aaRS) evolution. An aaRS consists eihter of 18, 19 or 20 amino acids. Are there biological rules or findings that allow the assumption that evolution started with aaRSs that had 18 or less different amino acids or that it started with aaRSs that had 20 or more different amino acids?

Are there rules like: The more complex an enzyme the more substrates can be recognized?

Thanks in advance.
