1. For the articles/books published before introduction of online hosting or the journals/ books still publish only print issues, the plagiarism can not be checked.
2. For the articles/ books/others available online, anti-plagiarism software's may be used.
It will may not be a wise decision to use free software. Many good pay software are available for that purpose.

For example, world premier institutions using TERNITIN and I-Tthenticate software tools to detect plagiarism. In Indian universities, the University Grants Commission (Higher Educational nodal agency, India) through it inter-university centre named INFLIBNET gives free access to all more 350 universities where scholars are mandatory scanned their manuscript to detect plagiarism (textual similarities) and now free access for scanning is already given for the scanning of scholars text before award of research degree.
