That remind me with roots in plants, I found in my garden two different plants their roots is mixed together that made my job harder to separate them from each other that may reflect the power of ethics inside us; as they set as they hard to pull them out.

I always like to simulate RG questions based on pure scientific style, so, Ethics are very close to chemical filtration procedure, where the assigned mixture (Human natural features) will be filtered into two parts, one part will sediments into the sedimentation paper ans it could be good (as good ethics) or neglected (as un-intended behavior) and the other part passing through that paper representing the residual trace of human ethics.

Really it is very difficult to define Ethics including all kinds of ethics like academic ethics, social ethics, PUBLICATION ETHICS (PLAGIARISM)!!

As you asked wehather ethics can be taught or not . I like to tell you that there is what we call hidden curriculum in schools and universities which means to provide students with implicit lessons of ethical considerations and values. It is called hidden because it doesn't need an examination , it is just learned . Thank you so much for your question.
