Indigenous/vernacular/traditional built environment is to be considered sustainable. I want to know the several aspects which make it socio- culturally sustainable.
Vernacular/traditional architectural forms are sustainable as they have been shaped throughout centuries on the basis of social, cultural and technical "material" that is available in a location.
- They do reflect the societal norms, hierarchy and living habits of the community that produces them. Distribution and size of open/closed spaces, specialized and, if any, gendered spaces etc. all reflect the cultural norms within that society, and these might be readable only to an eye that is familiar to that culture and invisible to an outsider.
- They do use the construction techniques and building materials available in that location and use the local technical knowledge and expertise of local builders. Building profession is in most cases inherited in direct line, or through master-apprentice relationship, therefore reflects a cultural continuity within itself.
I am sure there is loads to add but I hope these initial thoughts help.
Thank you very much Yasemin for your effective response. You wisely mentioned many aspects and have given a direction to my thought for further investigation.
