INS-1 cells which are isolated from a radiation-induced rat insulinoma due to the nonclonal nature are heterogeneous and have limited stability over extended culture periods. This probably may explain the discrepancies observed when using the parental INS-1 cells.
On the other hand, INS-1E cells are clonal in nature derived from parental cells based on both their insulin content and their secretory response to glucose. The clonal INS-1E beta-cell line has proven to be instrumental for numerous studies investigating the mechanism of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.
