Large parts of the world are currently under lockdown in order to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. There will come a time when the public will discuss whether this drastic restriction was worth the effort, particularly in the light of the social and economic fallout and the mental health consequences. At this point in time it is definitely too early to come to any firm conclusion. But as scientists, we need to be able to have criteria and indicators ready that we can utilize to contribute to this discussion with evidence-based arguments. So, what do we need to consider when we want to come to grips with these issues?
