How can I use the UV-Vis test in transmission mode to detect the compatibility or miscibility of two polymers in a blend and distribution of nanoparticles in the polymer blend?
I did UV-Vis test in transmission mode for a blend of two polymers, and for a nanoclay nanocomposite of that blend. how can I analyze the figures? for example, Can I conclude that the greater transmission of UV-vis , the greater degree of miscibility or compatibility?
and also the greater transmission of light indicates a better dipersion and distribution of nanoparticles, and that they do not agglomerated? ?
As the transmitted light depends on the viscosity of the solution, the miscibility or homogeneity of polymers can be detected using transmitted light in UV-Vis spectroscopy. If you introduce nanoparticles in it, you may get different bands depends on the type of nanoparticles which is due to the absorbance of light at specific wavelength by the nanoparticles. Reg., compatibility, I don't understand what kind of compatibility you are talking about. If I understand as 'it is about the compatibility of the polymer under UV-Vis spectrum of light', then the analysis should be done at constant intervals. You can compare the intensity of transmitted light after every constant intervals. If the polymers are getting degraded, it can be found by analyzing the intensity.
if you have 2 transparent polymers with similar or different refractive index for ideal blending (polymer molecules get homogeneously distributed) you will obtain a transparent blend with a refractive index in between. The higher the incompatibility the lower will be transparency of the blend.
