It is shown that thermal nonlinear optics is very strong. However, their response time is too slow, about 10^-3 second compared 10-^15 second in electronic nonlinear optics. By doping metal nanoparticles into host nonlinear optical material, Khurgin et al obtained a time response time up to picosecond:

I have received answer from Prof.Jacob B Khurgin:
The point of the paper is that the response is determined by the heat diffusion time. Therefore if we localize field in small regions the thermal diffusion will occur fast. It is important to understand that the speed thermal response is not an intrinsic property of the material but depends on geometry.
