It would be good to re-use bi-products where-ever possible so would appreciate any advice on left-over frankincense resin, after steam distillation to extract its essential oil. For example, can we use it to make incense?
The resin still contains aromatics!
I suppose left over resin material may be combined wiht a binder (example saw dust, dry straw or treated cow dung) to make incesne sticks.
Alternatively any liquid extracted from the left over resin may be used in potpourri jars
Normally, there is no more real volatil compounds after distillation. I don't know any interest in this material. If you burn it you can have an effect (which can be positive) because some heavy molecules can be precursors of smaller ones during combustion.
I agree with Pierre. The ethnobotanical use of the resin in Mexico is ceremonial and several native peoples burn the resin, so it can probably follow the aroma if you burn the residue
I think the resin left after distillation of the essential oil of B. sacra, B. carterii, B. serrata etc. is the most valuable part. They are excellent anti-inflammatories and are good for arthritis. The active ingredients also work in the brain & are good for memory problems etc.
