Is it standard procedure to be asked to pay to have an article published in a journal? I recently noticed that if the peer-reviewed International Journal of Language and Linguistics accepts an article, the author is required to pay $160 to "defray the cost of publication." Are there linguistics journals that pay the author?

Hi Tanya,
It is unclear in your question if you are referring to 'open-access' journals and/or 'subscription' journals? With subscription-based journals, many now offer a voluntary open-access option. Either way, it is not common practice for 'reputable' journals, so far, to ask for a fee 'up-front' - but I guess that might change as competition and business models adapt and change. Some popular journals, although not many, ask for a 'review administration' charge up-front. I personally think that is wrong on so many different levels.
In my experience, there are few journals that pay for manuscript contribution. The only exception that I know of is 'magazine-style' journals that can be purchased from the shelves of bookstores. For instance, I was recently approached by the 'Nursing Standard' and requested to submit a health promotion-related CPD article for which I was paid a nominal fee after publication. However, one is not going to get 'rich' from such efforts!!

Some Journals are free to Publish but i have never found 1 who could do it for free. Regards

In many (most) biomedical journals you have to pay to get your paper published, frequently up to USD 1500.-
