The compulsory age for going on retirement in Ghana is 60years. Yet some workers want to hang on their jobs even after 60yrs. What might be the factors accounting for this?
If you intend to research this area further, also consider investigating the factors in different economic classes (e.g., financially and non-financial stable class). I would like to believe, the financially stable class do not mind retiring, while those who are poorly paid are not keen to retire.
The question is analogous to our fear of death while knowing very well that we can't dodge it.
In most cases, in-service personnel that approach retirement are always afraid for they do not know how life will taste like without their jobs.
Moreover, a majority of them fail to invest in their future/to plan in advance for their retirement and as a result, would not like to/are not prepared to bear the burden of retirement.
Another factor you might want to consider is whether workers are from the public or private sectors. For instance, here in Brazil, most workers from the public institutions look forward to retiring because they receive a good pension for the rest of their lives. Most of these retired civil servants spend their time traveling and doing other fun activities. Also, you should look into the benefits the government offers to retired people. Another example from Brazil is that we have many services, provided by something similar to community centers, that are much cheaper for elderly people. So the elderly have access to various courses and activities to keep an active lifestyle. Personally, I do not know if I will want to retire so young (at sixty years old).
I think that one of the reasons is the fear of running out of money after living a luxurious life . Another reason is that at this age the worker supports a lot of people in his/her family and there is a fear of not being able to meet these financial needs. Finally, the amount of the pension does not allow the worker to live comfortably after spending some years working hard.
