Metal oxide and modified metal oxides have been widely used for dye degradation/photocatalysis. But what about metal nanoparticles, would they be able to degrade the dye?
Yes, metal nanoparticles have the ability to generate the reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydroxyl, superoxide, singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. These species have been widely recognised as the oxidation contributors. The discussion point is Au and Ag, stability concerns give priority to the Au over Ag because Ag is inevitable to oxidative dissolution to produce its oxide species while Au is stable over a wider pH range.
Yes it is possible with metal nanoparticles. Now the question is whether you want to use metal particles as photocatalysts or simply as catalysts for borohydride reduction of dyes.
