In teaching ESP, like Business English in EFL environment, teaching materials that teacher and studetns get access to are primarily printed reading textbooks, and handouts. and they are convenient for students to use, otherwise, e-books and online materials require teachers to invest more time and effort in providing channels and media for students to use.
Teachers are challenged in providing real-life business English instruction. Language and knowledge only from textbooks seem to be unauthentic and students seem to lose confidence in teachers who have no work experience in business circle.
Teachers are sometimes required to participate in task-based course curriculum development in some programs, e.g. language lab case-study compiling, esp data collecting, corpus researching, etc.
p.s. What would a teacher do while the school authority and students don't like didatic lecture employed in EFL classroom?
Hi. Try the flipped class methodology. Create a group for all students on the What'sup or any media. Send them a short video to watch and comment on before class, and integrate the students in discussions that require critical thinking to solve problems. Students' participation will consume time and efforts needed to teach and learn. During the class, you can ask students to watch another related video, and ask them to answer prepared exercises in peers or in groups. This will keep students busy all the time, and they will share information.
There are two major approaches to using learning tasks as part of the curriculum, Task-Based Learning and Task-Supported Learning. The former is what we call it when there is no explicit instruction prior to performing the task, so that knowledge is revealed during the task. The latter is when there is explicit instruction before performing the task, so that the task employs ideas first offered by the teacher.
Sometimes these two approaches are seen as being incompatible, but the reality is that it depends on the tasks themselves - some are not possible for the student to accomplish without at least some previous instruction.
Regardless of whether instruction precedes the tasks, the task should be a basic unit of learning in the lesson plan, supporting the outcome goals and objectives of the course and curriculum, and so structured so as to make it possible to evaluate the tasks objectively.
Thanks a lot ! The flipped class approach is recommended by teachers teaching some ESP courses in Chinese vacational shools and colleges, for example, cross-boarder e-commerce is a promising course and teachers tend to get students engage in activities like posting a product to sell on a specific website. Before the class, the students could be asked to review the all info. of the products. As to English learning, it is quite hard to find appropriate vedio adapture to students at intermediate level (some are starter of college English level) . Anyway, some guidance can be operated by means of mother language /Chinese. Aida Mohammad Ali Bakeer Thanks again.
Michael W. Marek I appreciated your participation in the discussion, sir ! Detailed statements help to clarify the questions. The structureed class activities and tasks are designed with the asisstance of the multimedia facilities and language learning softwares in Business English learning and teaching here in China. Task-based learning is difficult to handle with at most Chinese universities, i believe. The major difficulties lie in the reality that teachers themselves are not competent at both fluently speaking Business English and operating classroom business tasks. While the central education authority -MOE is taking actions to ensure the education quality, but qualified business English teachers are very needed here. so task-based learning and teaching impose lots of pressure on teachers. Thanks again!Michael W. Marek Michael W. Marek
@Aida Mohammad Ali Bakeer Great idea! Actually, i am making vedios and task-based class assignments. They are all relevant to my research project - Cross-boarder E-commerce teaching and learning for English major in Chinese contexts. I need to gain more insights into the project, so i launched this discussion. Aida Mohammad Ali Bakeer
