Dear colleagues,
I am looking for a free DNA sequence assembly and contig editing software with a user-friendly interface, particularly suitable for routine corrections of a large number of DNA sequences (from traditional Sanger sequencing). The software should include chromatograms editing and forward and reverse reads assembly. It seems SeqTrace is an interesting one, but any other suggestion would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your answers. Most of you suggest bioedit. I use this software for several applications, it is very useful. But for routine forward/reverse sequence assembly and corrections, it is not as convenient as other paying softs. I will test GeneStudio and bioedit + AliView, but any other suggestions are welcome!

Try DNADragon or SeqAssem. Both are available from http://www.sequentix.de.
There are trial licenses available.

SangeranalyseR is a new package in R (=free) to assemble batches of chromatograms. The contig output may require some manual curation currently (as of Feb 2021) but Sangeranalyser does the bulk of the work very fast and in an automated manner.
I think UGENE it the best free tool for this.
