Now a days... regarding these formulations the most important thing is it should have the exact original plants... So that should be evaluated for authenticated drug.... secondly the formulations are prepared according to the trail and error basis according to their experience... most of them are not having scientific proof... So it is necessary to standardized.... especially for presence of adulterants....
We found Triphala powder inhibited activities of 2 important purified enzymes in vitro (hyalurinidase and collagenase type 2 are the enzymes). Even more interesting: The effect of Triphala decreased after the powder was stored 7-10 days room temperature. So, we could standardize Triphala based on its inhibitory based on its potency for inhibiting these enzymes. I approached some industries to test this idea, and a paper was published. Unfortunately, there was no interest. I hope this comment is helpful.
We already have procedures for standardisation of herbal drugs. But, in the ayurvedic context it is more important to know, what are the comparative standards. Simply having the right proportion of an ingredient wont help. We need a standard to compare the efficacy as well...Sadly..that is what Ayurveda lacks most..
In my opinion, the ayurvedha is the same with Indonesian Jamu; not too many scientific support. So, there should be a way for making it more scientific acceptable; while the business has to be run for doing the studies.
If we only take the traditional way for preparing the dosage form; then it would not be accepted by modern people; but if we use a more modern dosage form; the activity may be impaired by it. So, the researcher has to find out the new technology to preserve the activity and its efficacy. When it is not available, then we could still running as the way it is; the market be served by half activity, and keep the money making machine to work to gathered the fund for finding this new technology. As long as the market absorb the product, that would also mean the product still have the activity. If the market feel no advantage of using to the product, then the product would be on the self limited situation.
