I want to combine variabele 1 with variabele 2 into a new variabele, 3. (So var 1 is 30 respondents, var 2 is 30, so var 3 is 60). However, when I do this with restructure cases (varstocases) my original variables are deleted and that is not what I want. Does someone know how to keep the variables in their original state?

Hello Maayke Mijnsbergen. Please provide a listing showing what the data look like now (for 3 respondents, not all 30), and another listing showing what you want it to look like after variables 1 and 2 have been combined to make variable 3. Thank you.

this is an example of 3 respondents. I want to combine PPQ1 and PPQ2 together,
and PPQ3,PPQ4 and PPQ5 together. So I want to create 1 variable with PPQ1 and PPQ2 and then it has to have the numbers: 3 3 3 3 3 3.
For the first one, I did the following:
varstocases
/make ppqaction from PPQ1 PPQ2
/index q (ppqaction).
This worked.
However, I did it again for:
varstocases
/make ppqlast from PPQ3 PPQ4 PPQ5
/index q (ppqlast).
I copied PPQ1, PPQ2, PPQ3, PPQ4 and PPQ5 because when you change a variable with varstocases they will be removed but I wanted to keep these 5 so duplicated them. However, I got the error: This did not work with the error: The INDEX variable name q is also the name of the ID variable or a copied variable or the COUNT variable.
Do you know what's wrong?

Hi Maayke,
I hope you are doing well! Based on the information provided, it sounds like you can just select the data from variable 1 and copy it, then paste it into a third variable. Then, copy the data from variable 2, scroll to the bottom of variable 3 and paste it. This method should be easy because there are only 30 participants (i.e., you should not need to use syntax).
You can select the data and then right click to select copy/paste.

Hi Bryant M Stone thank you for your answer! Unfortunately that is not possible, I am a master university student and I have to hand in the syntax... when I just copy and paste you do not get a syntax..
Do you know a more easy way to fix this?

It is still not very clear to me what you are trying to do. Suppose the data for the first 3 subjects look like this--notice that I have changed some numbers so that not all data points = 3!

Do you want to end up with something that looks like this, with 99 being a missing value indicator?

2 2 3 5
2 3 99 4
3 1 5 3
3 2 4 2
3 3 99 1
If so, your problem is that you you have only 2 variables going into ppqaction but 3 variables going into ppqlast. VARSTOCASES does not allow that. To get the data I have in the second listing above, I computed a new variable called JUNK (in the original file) and set it = 99 on all rows. Then I included it with ppq1 and ppq2 when "making" ppqaction. You can use a MISSING VALUES command to treat 99 as a missing value in the restructured dataset.
If my second listing above does NOT show what you want the final restructured file to look like, then please provide a listing of your own that does show us what it should look like.
PS- I have deliberately not shared my code, because your response to another poster suggested that this is for a homework assignment.

Well, I will explain my situation. I have 24 variables, I have measured product quality on four items but I did this for 6 beauty brands (for example PPQ1LOREAL, PPQ1GARNIER, PPQ1ANDRELON etc., but also PPQ2LOREAL, PPQ2GARNIER, PPQ2ANDRELON, and for PPQ3/PPQ4 the same etc).
Now, I want to calculate the overall Cronbach's alpha, but in order to do so, I first need to put all the six brands of for example PPQ1 below each other into 1 variable.
Via the restructure button in SPSS it worked once, with PPQ1, but not with the rest of the PPQ's... Via command I did this for PPQ1:
VARSTOCASES /MAKE PPQ1FROM PPQ1LOREALPPQ1ANDRELON PPQ1SWISSE PPQ1GARNIER PPQ1BIORE PPQ1DAVITAMON
This worked. But now, each respondent has increased sixfold with for example items like age and other stuff and that is not what I want (this is not the case when using the Restructure button in SPSS, but this one only works with PPQ1.
I hope if you understand what I am saying. I just need to put them below each other without changing the rest of the file, the same as when you would just copy/paste the values.
