I use CHELSA v2.1 current, future (MPI-ESM1-2-HR/ and MRI-ESM2-0/), and LGM bioclimatic variables for SDM. However, when I look at LGM (MPI-M_MPI-ESM-P/ and MRI_MRI-CGCM3/) variables in QGIS, I see only a blank map. From what I read, some rasters are in the wrong units. How can I overcome this? Or is it appropriate to use CHELSA-TraCE21k for LGM when I use different GCM like MPI-ESM1-2-HR/ and MRI-ESM2-0 for the future?
There are a few things you can try to resolve the issue with blank LGM rasters in QGIS when using CHELSA data:
- Check raster properties - make sure the LGM GeoTIFFs have proper coordinate reference systems defined and units are correct (e.g. °C for temperature). Reproject if needed.
- Load rasters directly instead of via styling - sometimes QGIS styling can cause blanks if it can't parse units or CRS. Try dragging GeoTIFFs directly onto the canvas.
- Adjust color map min/max values - manually setting the min and max values on the color map can reveal data hidden due to contrast.
- Try downscaled global climate models - CHELSA-TraCE21k provides downscaled LGM data from CCSM4 and MIROC-ESM GCMs which may have better coverage.
- Interpolate voids - use the GDAL fillnodata tool to interpolate and fill missing areas if gaps are small.
- Mask void areas before analysis - create a mask layer to indicate regions with no data to exclude from modeling.
Please check the parameter settings of QGIS, if it still shows blank it is recommended to try to use ArcGIS to load the raster. To create SDM it is recommended to use R language to create the whole project. For example use sdm, MaxEnt, and biomod2 R package.
