I have data of soil 14C on the units of per mil, pMC or C14 year. How can I calculate the soil carbon turnover rate (year-1) or carbon residual time. Do I need models or equations?
The decay model follows 1955 peak bomb identification , as in https://journals.uair.arizona.edu/index.php/radiocarbon/article/viewFile/3640/3146 and related refs.
If your soil is in equilibrium, the 14C 'age' is in fact the mean residence time, i.e. an indication of the turnover rate. 14C information is more valuable if it refers to a specific fraction instead of the bulk OM.
