Post-fixing in Bouin's solution is supposed to increase staining intensity. However, IMHO, pathological staining intensity is to high most of the time anyway, covering cytological details. I prefer very pale staining, when you hold a slide against the light, it should be difficult to tell if the specimen is stained at all. Remember: low contrast can be improved by optical techniques, but details lost in a sea of colour cannot be recovered.

You may try the trichrome staining of Sterba and Schobess (Mikrokosmos 68 (1980) 253-254), which is a 1-step procedure (see, for example, https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/index.php?topic=7720.0):

Grind 1.5 g anilinblue, 2.0 g cottonblue, 1.0 g waterblue, 2.0 g Orange G, 10 g Nuclear fast red, 4 g Tartaric acid, 8 g phosphortungstic acid and 40 g potassium aluminum sulphate together in a mortar (anilinblue, cottonblue and waterblue are isomeric triphenylmethane dyes differentiated by the position of sulphonate groups, you may simply use the cheaper dye mixture sold under either name). Dissolve 1 g of the mixture in 100 mL dd water, filter and stain in this solution for 20 min. Differentiate in 94% i-propanol.

This is the original procedure, I reduce the blue dyes to a total of 0.9 g, the orange G to 0.2 g and use the mixture at a concentration of 0.9%.
