I am simulating a uniform flow past a square prism undergoing rotational oscillations. I am using ANSYS Fluent solver for my simulation which is in 2D.
I assume that the oscillation is sinusoidal in nature and I impart the oscillation to the prism through a user-defined function (udf) written in C language. In my udf i am using the DEFINE_CG_MOTION macro but I am not using the 6-DOF solver or the macros associated with it.
Are the mass and moment of inertia of the oscillating prism of any importance to my simulation? Do I have to include the 6-DOF solver?
Once you have specified the oscillation or the movement of the square prism, you don't need to use the 6-DOF solver. I think it depends on your actual physical problem. The oscillation of the prism can change the flow feature. If you want to use the 6-DOF solver, you can not specify the oscillation. So why did you specify the prism oscillation?

You might need the 6 DOF solver but you have to do a step-by-step analysis, 1-DOF at the time. In principle, you have a 1-DOF system, if you are only allowing the object to rotate, but in reality it is a 6-DOF system say like a ship. Regarding, the flow: even if you have a simple uniform harmonic inflow condition, the flow field quickly develops into 3-D even when you have define a 1-DOF rotational freedom system of the object. The fluid-structure interaction in terms of boundary layer modelling is also important. You need to address if you should solve the system equations as either weakly or fully coupled equations. This will be a function of the displacement of the body.
