Publons publishes the finished report, along with the author’s responses and the editor’s decision letter of accepted articles. Reviewers are given the choice of letting their name appear in the report. I wonder whether there is any advantage in agreeing to my identity being disclosed. Shouldn't peer review be anonymous?
Yes, I agree, anonymous is best, although your name can inadvertently show up on edited documents just by holding your mouse arrow over the icon!
It may be a problem because there are plenty of petty and vindictive scientists. Not everyone can give or receive an honest review. Anonymous reviewing is, in part, a recognition of this human failing/condition. :)
Transparency and honesty look good in theory and they are things that we like to say we cherish, but what we find is that when people say they want honesty, what they mean is they want and appreciate honesty and transparency that benefit them.
So, no I would not provide my name and allow it to be used in this way.
On the other hand, I do think the Associate Editor who handles and recommends a decision on a particular paper should be identified (as is done in journals like PLOS One).
