I am doing on research safety motivation (intrinsic & extrinsic) using Self Determination Theory. Should we measure both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation together or multiple ? Thank you for your advices
Hi Ida, it all depends on your research question. Usually, statistically, we measure the regulations either independetly (amotivation, external, introjection, identification, intrinsic motivation), composed (autonomous vs controlled motivation), or as a relative index (relative degree of motivation based on autonomy). The benefit of using SDT is the nuanced view on types of motivation. Hence, measuring this nuance seems usuful (agains, depends on your research question, sometimes we are interested in only intrinsic motivation). Good luck!
Hi Lucas, I also had the same thoughts while conducting a similar study. I opted for measuring both differently, though I also understood that measuring it once could answer for me and should be a cheaper way to get to my destination.
In another way of thinking I consider measuring them separately as an opportunity to verify the validity and help the analytical and control process to give more valid results. It would however result in a survey with more questions in the case of the quantitative approach.
Hi Ida, I share similar views with Lucas. The measurement is dependent on your research questions since most of the time they are measured independently to affect a specific behaviour. see this article for further insight Article Motivation in Gamified Social Media Learning: A Psychologica...
