I am working on a paper that discusses the role of women in promoting environmental protection in chile, peru, ecuador, belize, dominican republic. I am also interested in their representation in environmental decision making, as well as GDP/ per capita and GINI coefficient for these countries.

This is a fascinating project! In the fieldwork that I have conducted in Latin America (particularly Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador) I have noticed, without having specific data on this, that women are at the front of environmental defense. One speculative reason might be that as war and conflict in these countries is gendered and men are most often killed, women take care not only of the families but also of the communities. Nevertheless, Latin American countries are deeply macho-societies; therefore, it is common that at the national and local levels it is men who are the decision-makers.
