I am interested in conducting research in bush Alaska for my masters thesis. I teach in a village of 100 at school with 18 students. What research questions come to mind? I seek to help the struggling community or do research that could help empower the students to change the cycle of abuse and apathy that exists in the current climate.
Are you sure you have the permission of the villages to air their dirty laundry? I visit the villages every summer and the stories I hear that have led to suicide are about sexual abuse of incest. The ration of child sexually abused is 5 to 1 before the age of 5 and the age of acknowledge for wrong doing is 12. Per capita Northern Alaska has the highest rate of suicide due to this one factor. I would ask have you been touched by a family member in a private area before you were five as the first question and the second question for would be have you touched a family member in his or her private areas by the time you were 12? I just lost a powerful friend to cancer from Suvunga. She and her father were native missionaries in the region until they died. I would ask: Have you spoken out about inner village issues such as: a physical abuse, b natural struggles, lack of governmental aid, c sexual abuse.

I would like to stray away from any research question regarding abuse, but instead, seek to deepen a dying culture and provide hope for the future.
