Various studies on the use of low cost optical flow sensor packages, e.g. "digital mouse sensors", have demonstrated two dimension linear measurement accuracies in the range +/- 20mm over relatively large displacements, (on the order of 10's of meters), for autonomous robotic applications and accuracies of +/- .05mm over small displacements, (< 50mm).  I am searching for a sensor package, or sensor package array, and the necessary interpolation / error correction algorithms to assemble a low cost, small form factor and environmentally robust assembly capable of medium resolution, (+/-0.25mm), X-Y measurements over 0-4 meter distances with repeatability on the same scale.

To my knowledge thus far the accumulative errors of existing sensor packages limit measurement resolutions over 4 meters to +/- 5mm, 20X my target.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
