EV battery pack enclosure/box contains sensitive components that are constantly exposed to high impact forces, shocks, road-induced vibrations, debris, and stones.
Therefore, when designing the battery pack enclosure/box, how the battery pack enclosure/box developers are taking these factors into account.?
Most of the design ideas try to minimize weight and provide protection in case of crash. Getting more attention recently is a design to contain a possible fire.
Composite materials offer some good properties. There’s some testing being done to ensure the outer box stays intact during a collision. Sort of a scaled down version of an explosion proof box. - That implies (maybe) a trade off or weight for added safety.
And at same time the battery mfg’s are asking if they or the car manufactures could be held libel for damages ??? One additional idea being looked at is filling the enclosures with fire suppressant foam from an on-board system. This is fraught with problems, one is the need to refresh the foam every few years.
