Sir/ madam i wanted to know that i have short column of huge section of 500mm x 500mm for purely axial load of 300kN
IS code says we need to provide at least 0.8% steel
my question is why we need to provide steel if my concrete can take load
long. steel with ties provide confinement to the concrete core in which it will fail by crushing and bursting out if it was not provided with such reinforcement.
Minimum reinforcement is provided to ensure ductility in combination with ties and if spiral ties are provided then it behaves as very good ductile behaviour.
- horizontal movements can cause tension in the column
- helps concrete to resist cracking
- act as confinement for the concrete
- improves overall ductility of the column
Your compressive stress appears to be extremely low (1.2 MPa). You could dispose of reinforcement provided you can ensure :
No bending moment, No shear force, No horizontal displacement, No buckling
