Quality assessment in fluorescent microscopy: testing deblurring

I cannot find an article, that describes a successful use of metric other than SNR/MSE to characterize deblurring of fluorescent images. Could you please recommend me one, preferably using no reference "ground truth" image? My research shows that common metrics like SSIM, VIF and likely wavelet-based ones fail to characterize deblurring success, especially for Z-stacks.

Thanks for the answer, but it is not what I am asking about:

let's suggest that we made two images with different acquisition time (let's suggest the system to be totaly noise-free). How to explain numerically which one is better?

Or:

We are doing deconvolution. How to define the stopping criterion in terms not of MSE but in terms of some global goodness?
