In PubMed, what can affect the publication date from one month to the next: e.g. if in January I limit my search to 2014/01/01:2014/12/31[dp] why do I get a different no. of results when I now do the same search for the same publication dates?

I think the implications are that each date field needs to be consistent and permanent so that whichever one you use to limit your search will remain constant. DEP should always be the DEP, and the DP should stay the DP instead of one flowing into the other.
Since asking this question, I have heard that another cause of variation within fixed date parameters using the same date field is that publishers sometimes submit bundles of content (or a journal gets approved for inclusion) these are then "retro-indexed" in PubMed.

Thanks again for that clarification, Frank. So for any search to be reproducible and is limited by date, the constant date options from the dropdown list in Advanced Search are restricted to Entrez Date and DCOM (date of completion)?
