Why do researchers or say academics rush or become anxious to publish especially very close to their promotion time after waiting so long without initial attempt?
Is the concept of ' Publish or Perish ' fair to the academician ? An academician job is to teach under graduate & post graduate students & guide students on research . He can be a co - author in the publications of his students . Ultimately , it is the total publications , including articles in journals , chapter in books & relevance of the work which is essential , rather than insisting on yearly publications .It would be injustice to science , if academicians are compelled to publish , for the sake of promotions or other reasons . It is essential that his contribution to teaching is also assessed for promotion .
Publish or perish describes the pressure in academia to continually publish academic work to sustain or further one's career. It is a race to get more and more publications to one's credit.

After accomplishing a certain level of excellence, keen researchers focus on bringing up new ideas through their guide ship. It is only a small percentage of academicians that focus on improving their statistics. After becoming an established researcher, the term 'perish' is naturally removed from their career as each work will have their signature evenif it is not published with them as the first author.
I quite understand this but there is a paradigm shift from "publish or perish" to "visible or vanish" going by a webinar that I participated in on Elsevier Research Academy. The impact of one's work is the key nowadays. It is unfortunate that quantity/number of papers thumps quality/impact of papers in some institutions or promotion is based on the number of publication.
Publish or perish. ... "Publish or perish" is a phrase coined to describe the pressure in academia to rapidly and continually publish academic work to sustain or further one's career. Successful publications bring attention to scholars and their sponsoring institutions, which can help continued funding and career.
Apart from those who have "teaching only" appointments, academics are generally paid to teach, undertake research and supervision, and engage in administrative tasks.
It is not unreasonable for institutions to expect academics to publish research papers.
