Having other scholars and colleagues give us feedback and relate to our work is really nice, but I guess that we do what we do because we have something important to say, regardless of the amount or quality of feedback we get. I think that it is also important that we make our research findings relevant to wider audiences than our friends at the ivory tower.
A word of encouragement definitely goes a long way. Any research can have different perspectives and so encouragement, citations show that your work is relevant.
